 I see what you did in that patch. Doing that would resolve the problem.

 Perhaps the plan was to keep templates streamlined, with such logic
 happening somewhere upstream?

 I think the problem is with {{{bp_get_new_group_invite_friend_list()}}}
 returning {{{false}}}. Perhaps instead of returning {{{false}}}, a
 possible solution would be for it to return a {{{string}}}.
