 Good catch about `esc_html()`. I hadn't thought about that.

 Changing the priority seems fine to me. I think there's still value in
 having it be less than 10, so that third-party filters at the default
 priority will receive an already-formatted string. 8 seems fine (as long
 as we know that it'll run after the `esc_html` call which is also at 8 -
 though it seems like this is a race condition)
