Comment:

 I figured out the problem.  It is not a problem with AJAX and I don't
 believe a problem with BP.  With PHP's mail() function unable to send
 email, WP hangs waiting for the email to send before responding to the
 request.

 I installed an SMTP plugin and it worked as expected once configured.
