Comment:

 This is correct and intented behavior. It's to help combat spam signups,
 and gives someone double opt-in protection. There are plugins and code
 snippets available that allow automatic account activation, but this
 removes an extra layer of spam deterrence.

 Having the link automatically log in someone is a security risk, since
 anyone who happened upon that email, could then hijack a user's account.

 All that being said, there are plenty of filters available that would
 allow you to do this in a plugin, if you so desire.
