 The default theme in BP 1.3 adds WP nav menu support.

 You can create your own custom menu under "Appearance > Menus":
 http://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Menus_SubPanel

 I'm guessing John just wanted to test the menu functionality on
 testbp.org.
