 I tested this with a standard install (MU and single) and it didn't have
 the same problem.

 Then, I tried to save a few different option combinations to see if that
 mattered.  After I'd saved a few different combinations, when I updated it
 the BP options reverted back to a previous combination.

 Unfortunately, then my server went down so I couldn't test more, but it
 seems it must be on a second and third save that on upgrade it's reverting
 back to one of the previous saves.  Doesn't make much sense since the
 values seem to be stored only once in wp_options, but it's what I
 experienced.

 I'll test more if my test domain comes back.
