Comment(by apeatling):

 1) bbPress is a separate product but it automatically included in the
 upcoming version 1.1 of BuddyPress. You do not need to download and set up
 bbPress separately.

 2) Yes it is required, but you do not need to be concerned with it.

 3) You can still install bbPress standalone and use it, and even integrate
 it with BuddyPress. This will be significantly harder though.

 I will update the docs.
