 I wrote this into a plugin recently http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins
 /enhanced-buddypress-widgets/ and thought I would submit it as a patch for
 BuddyPress core. It augments the Groups and Members widgets to allow
 admins to select which of the three states (Newest, Active, Popular) is
 the default.
