 Follow up question: Why does any of the functionalities ''need'' AJAX? I
 would think anything we do via AJAX we could also do via hitting a
 specific "action URL" and then redirecting back (like was done before)?

 Regarding the plugins redirecting, I tend to agree this is a poor pattern.
 IMO the more pressing reason to fix this is that plugins with a new admin
 menu item, admin notice, or admin pointer no longer can show these right
 after activation.
