 external dependencies to `wpdb` of `compat.php` or PHP8.

 Thanks! Reverted the changes to `wpdb` for now, though including
 `compat.php` might be preferable in the long run.

 Will look into the issues with `script-loader.php` and `install.php` in a
 few hours.
