Comment:

 Since the original commit was reverted, the bug no longer exists in
 `trunk` so this needs to be set back to `enhancement` and committed by the
 6.2 milestone. Moving for visibility.

 @iandunn or @Otto42 could either of you test out the new proposed patch
 and confirm that the back-compat logic here avoids the issue you reported
 earlier?
