 Any chance this will ever get properly addressed?

 This is a huge oversight. A theme developer can not set the default image
 still to this day when using WP_Customize_Cropped_Image_Control because
 WordPress is looking for an image ID number.

 Could we get around to fixing the default image display to work with a URL
 and then switch to an ID when an image is selected?
