 Replying to [comment:8 noisysocks]:

 This still needs a patch for 5.3. It is to bring the same functionality
 from #47872 to the API. Then the corresponding part has to be added to
 Gutenberg.

 Currently retrying to post-process images works when uploading from the
 Media Library and from the Media modal, but not when uploading through the
 API.

 Rising priority as ideally this would be done before beta2 :)
