Comment (by Birmingham):

I'm currently working on a site that changes a lot. It's an estate agency
site, with content originating from an Expert Agent XML feed. Sometimes
content needs auto-publishing to match what appears in the feed, or auto-
unpublishing to match what disappears from the feed, but rather than
deleting the media and re-downloading it and re-importing it etc if needed
again, which is a heavy process and messes with the URLs, I'd rather just
turn media into drafts when they've been used before but shouldn't be live
right now. Obviously if an image disappears from the feed, and I want it
no longer live on my site, there could be something wrong with it, like
being out of date or misleading, so I don't want in accessible via public
site search or Google or direct link via email or bookmark etc. Still, the
process of re-downloading and re-importing is heavy - just changing the
status to draft would be so much easier and due to this situation I'm
almost certain this feature will exist in future, when WordPress is more
developed, else there will be a rival great CMS that does it.
