 I like the approach you've outlined, and I agree 5.5 at the latest to
 remove any deprecated features now in supported PHP versions sounds very
 reasonable.

 (and, ironically enough, it was in the Site Health Checker, but I removed
 it for the same reason you've stated here, that's when the considerations
 from above were brought to my attention as well, so I thought I'd at least
 bring it up here for full consideration :) )
