 To @johnbillion's point, the biggest problem isn't the width of the column
 or font-size, but the fact that it's OSFA (one size fits all). That is,
 there's no personalization. A 10-12+ item list (often longer for admins),
 most of which at any given moment are irrelevant, is taxing. There's no
 sense of hierarchy, priority or importance. On top of that, plugins /
 themes get to jam themselves in anywhere.

 Aesthetics are an issue, but not really the crux of the (UX) friction(s)
 imho.
