Comment:

 In general this could be a useful feature but there are lots of nuances,
 for example determining which sites should or shouldn't be shown in the
 widget, which user roles should be allowed to place the widget (super
 admins or regular site admins), how to handle non-public sites, etc.

 This is a great candidate for a feature that should be developed as a
 plugin first before being proposed for inclusion in core.

 If someone wants to develop this and link to it here, this ticket can be
 reopened in due course.
