 I think some wires are being crossed here as I think from what @hedgefield
 is actually proposing is what we'd consider 'real notifications' whereas
 what @johnbillion has proposed in the Core post is not so much a
 notifications API, but a email API instead.

 If you were to ask someone about notifications in this modern age, people
 will without a shadow of a doubt expect notifications like on
 iPhone/Android or Facebook/Twitter where it's a dismissible message in
 some kind of notification area. Email is separate and we already have
 `wp_mail` doing a lot for us already.

 We need to be clear on the expectations here I think because the
 screenshots added to this ticket already indicate a modern, social media
 approach whereas I think the original expectation was for notifications of
 things via email. I don't see why we can't have both working harmoniously
 but it's something we need to decide on.
