I was looking for a way to change media/attachment statuses from Published
to Draft and found this long thread. Our use case is translation. We have
a main site in English, each post has many images. We are setting up
another language with its own WordPress install as we'd like not mess with
multi-language plugins. My plan was to make it easy for our translator:
export all content from the English site, import it into the new language,
unpublish all posts and pages. Then, for each translation, the editor
could find the English post already formatted in English with all the
media files in it, and would just need to edit the descriptions and
content, then hit Publish. But in the current way of WordPress, all media
files will remain available to search engines for indexing, and we might
create a SEO mess with Google seeing the same images twice with the exact
same descriptions, until the translator gets to the post they are part of
 and updates the descriptions.

But if we could unpublish all media to draft, that would solve our
 problem.
Can anyone think of a better way of accomplishing our goal, ie duplicate
content and unpublishing it to make media loading and translating for an
editor, so she doesn't have to deal with each image transfer one by one?
