 Welcome to Trac and thank you for creating the ticket.

 I tried to reproduce the issue:

 1. By editing an existing post and adding a "Read More" link in content
 2. Modified Custom Post Type, adding Excerpt field and updating post by
 adding an excerpt to it

 In both cases the "content" key returned to full content in JSON. The only
 difference I used my custom post type by turning `show_in_rest` value to
 true.

 /wp-json/wp/v2/api/trips/148

 Can you please explain exactly how to reproduce the issue?
