 This is a fantastic improvement Felix.

 With the prevalence of multisite these days, it would be very efficient to
 see the same validation rules apply to usernames single site as multisite,
 including not allowing duplicates in the whole database. Of course in
 cases like WordPress.com, that's inconvenient but I'd say installs of that
 magnitude are more the exception than the rule. We run several multisite
 networks where we expressly don't want to allow duplicate usernames among
 the sites.

 While applying the rules of multisite to single site in the future would
 leave invalid usernames in old WordPress sites, at least there would not
 be additional problematic usernames created and eventually (in a few
 years) one could sanitise existing user databases without too much
 trouble.
