 I see this haven't got so far and it's neither rejected or closed as
 wontfix. I'm curious if there's any interest from the core team to support
 this. Maybe the approach isn't right just yet?

 Here's what I'm thinking. I would swap Gravatar with self-hosted avatars
 in core and move Gravatar to an official plugin (just like Akismet). And
 ship it with WordPress already preactivated. Users (and admins/site
 builders) would be able to choose the preferred method. How does this
 sound? Are there any negative impacts that would affect WordPress or
 Gravatar by any means?
