Comment:

 I think we need to relook at this entirely in regard to the feedback. 4.7
 will now include support for the ping functions to take in a WP_Post
 object, which can assist here a tiny bit.

 I think the suggestion of moving to_ping to meta might make sense. We can
 do a search of how many plugins might be accessing to_ping directly...I
 doubt there are that many.
