 @swissspidy I already planed to suggest this as a feature project (I am
 the author of the plugin you mentioned). But after reading the post on the
 make blog, I thought I have to add some unit tests first.

 If would love to see the language fallback implemented into core as soon
 as possible. Even though that would mean the "death" for my plugin as it
 is now. But that's a good thing :)

 I also disliked the idea of additional UI elements. The first version only
 had a filter. But users demanded something they can easily use.

 On the contributor day at WordCamp Cologne last year, we discussed some
 options. Implementing the fallback languages as a translatable string
 would make sense. Adding the option to filter it (as I have done in the
 plugin) would be a good solution.

 So count me in for finding a solution that could go into core.
