 I really like the direction we're going with @wonderboymusic's latest
 patch. I'm pretty sure it won't cause any issues with sites already
 managed using Composer and doesn't preclude core from adding Composer
 support or plugin/theme autoloading down the road.

 One thing I think might need to be added to the patch (at least, I didn't
 see it) is a polyfill for `spl_autoload_register()` like @rmccue
