 I also think that the dummy for the blog page is not perfect, but it is
 the way the system currently works. Not sure if that can be changed
 easily.

 I agree with you that a single select field for the front page would be
 much simplier.

 The setting for the posts page could be removed if the concept of a
 virtual page is possible. I think there should be a extra setting on the
 Permalink screen then which allows to enter the slug of the blog archive.
 It can default to /blog, similiar to the category slug which defaults to
 /category.
