Comment:

 As I didn't have time to write up/test an alternate approach and it's RC1
 time, thinking the best thing to do here is to punt to the next release,
 and commit early next cycle with a complete solution, like the one
 proposed by @azaozz.

 I really like this idea and ticket, and still want to see it happen.
