 I just want to note that there is a bug in the gist. The transient should
 be deleted only after the messages are displayed, not when they are
 retrieved. (See my
 [https://gist.github.com/JDGrimes/809f180d7f3893901641/revisions
 revision].) Otherwise the list of messages might get retrieved and never
 displayed. For example, if there was an Ajax request, the messages would
 be deleted, but not dispalyed.
