 I just to add for discussion this point:  Akismet (on a commercial level)
 is one of the ways that wordpress "commercializes" the free wordpress
 product.  I can understand that disabling comments by definition also
 renders that plug in moot.  It is perhaps a bigger question they just
 turning off comments, it'a also about how that effects the business model
 of Wordpress.  At the same time, the comment issue (comment spam and
 handling) is enough of an issue that commercial clients are asking for
 alternate solutions to wordpress.  I would rather use wordpress for all
 sorts of reasons, but the point of turning off comments and otherwise
 disabled any third part access beyond viewing the site is coming up more
 and more often.
