 So the current status of this issue is that Okax's patch is pending
 review, but we really want a solution that uses ajax to save the menu
 instead.

 Seems like this has been unfixed for too long. Anything I can do to help?

 +1 on okax's patch. Seems to still work on 4.3-dev. The logic is solid.
