 > The issue with general updates is that there's nowhere to display the
update count or a link to updates in the "admin" menu that comes down
there, so you wouldn't have any clear path to addressing the notification.
I think that's probably fine as its separate icon for now.

I'm ok with a separate icon for now, however given core updates come
inside the "Updates" menu inside "Dashboard", and dashboard has the update
message at the top once opened — we should just show a badge there and put
the dot on the W icon as for comments. This would also scale better on
 mobile.

But yes: we can keep the icon for now and iterate in a later patch.

 > Other note - currently (in the patch) the "home" icon is used in place
of the W icon in the admin context, which I think makes sense because that
links to the front page of the site instead of the dashboard. But, we do
lose that branding there, so not sure whether that's worth it.

The W icon should always stay there. Not just for branding, but also for
context. With this point you also made me noticed that I overlooked a
piece in the previous i7, which was the opening of the menu from the admin
side on mobile. So I reworked a bit the design, and followed your idea of
using the house icon ("Home" action). If we put it immediately to the
right of the site name it would work well. :)

So, uploaded i8 design above. ;)
