there's not much of an API for the admin menu).

I'd personally suggest to keep (if possible, of course, maybe even post
4.3) the back-end and front-end navigations identical. This not just for a
slight ease of use for developers, but more importantly to give stability
of the navigation for users that don't have to "read" two different menus
and understand a difference between front-end and back-end menu.

This might seem minor, but will give a lot of stability and ease of use to
WordPress. It's just the same menu. Couldn't be simpler than that. :)

Which also means that the visual treatment should be the same, icons
included — as the mockup (which I get, could also be done in a future
release to keep this doable for 4.3).

 > I also really like the idea of merging the WordPress icon in with the
site title and killing the dashboard icon, but not sure if we're willing
to lose that "About" menu in the process.

This is a good question. My advice would be:

 1. Let's assess the links in there. Where do they go to?
 2. Maybe we can add them at the bottom of the menu for now, until we make
sure we remove them OR we just keep the icon separate until we do the
 assessment (1).
