 The fact that it it's one column is not to make it mobile first, but
 rather to allow the preview to be as large as possible and to keep the UI
 focused. That's a fundamental piece of it that I don't see us changing any
 time soon. It has the added benefit, of course, of usually working on
 mobile without extra effort. I have no idea whether there were any other
 proposed approaches in 3.4 or whether they did user testing then, but what
 we have does work pretty well, especially with #31336, which is in trunk
 now. Because that essentially structures things into virtual columns with
 one shown at a time, doing multi-column layouts in core would
 significantly disrupt the experience.
