Comment:

 This bug a) completely stops WordPress from working by corrupting the
 .htaccess file, and b) causes data loss in some cases (erasing non-
 WordPress data from the .htaccess file), so I'm marking it "critical". I
 hope this will bring more attention to it. I apologize if this step is
 inappropriate, but I don't know what else to do.
