Comment:

 I hadn't looked into it much, but that is the uniform variable syntax
 backwards incompatable change biting us.  More info:
 https://wiki.php.net/rfc/uniform_variable_syntax#semantic_differences_in_existing_syntax.
 I'm going to commit the change so that we get fully green in php7.
