 What do you think about supporting automatic backups upon automatic
 updates?

 Four days ago I opened #31138 (Backup of a plugin / theme directory) and
 attached a patch example, hoping that such a basic feature could find its
 way into the update flow.

 Without automatic backups, there is no way to do anything about user's
 customizations of plugin / theme files.

 '''Customizations are expected''' because we provide the `plugin-
 editor.php` and `theme-editor.php` pages to do exactly that. It's not safe
 to delete our stuff without making a backup before. It wasn't so with a
 manual update, it shouldn't be so with an automatic update.
