 We generally only add controls to core when they're needed for core
 features or if it's a basic input type that should be supported out of the
 box (history: #28477). I'm not sure whether this something that fits those
 criteria, although it's also possible that a lot of people would find it
 useful if we added it.

 Could you provide some sample use cases for a dropdown-taxonomy control
 (which would presumably ship with a taxonomy argument that defaults to
 category)? That would help with evaluating whether it's something that
 should be in core.
