 I am having the same issue. I think it might have something to do with my
 PHP handler, which is DSO.

 Steps to reproduce:

 1) visit /wp-admin/update-core.php
 2) select plugin(s) to update
 3) enter FTP Password (Hostname and Username already filled in)
 4) click "Proceed"
 5) get the error seen below:

 I also have a site where after failing to update 4 plugins at once (all
 just like this), it finishes the operation and says "All updates have been
 completed." but leaves the .maintenance file on the server.

 I have all the folder permissions set to allow correct permissions to the
 same user that I enter for the FTP info.
