 Some info on my systems for you

 OS      Ubuntu Linux 14.04.2
 PHP     Version 5.5.9-1ubuntu4.14

 root directories set to ftpuser and ftpgroup (Have always been)
 Updates only via wp-admin (via ftp)

 Permissions correct for the above (as always been)

 Have tried 0777 on all folders leading down to the plugins (and including
 the plug in folders)

 Have also tried giving permissions to www and root and setting them as the
 users and group

 Still unable to update as it fails to remove existing directory

 Resest everything back to its original state

 Downgrade to 4.3.1

 All plugins and everything else updates fine
