 This is a lot more complex than it appears, according to the RFC's that
 I've read (at least to my understanding), the first part of the email
 address (i.e. johndoe) is allowed to have uppercase and lowercase letters.
 However, it's not clear whether JohnDoe at abc.com and johndoe at abc.com are
 two different mailboxes.

 The domain part of the address is only allowed `a-z`, `-`, and `.` in a
 case insensitive manner. However I feel that I must have missed an update
 to an RFC because you can now send emails with chinese characters in them.

 Perhaps someone more versed in these RFC's can shed some light here.
