I think authors should be allowed to create a page with title and content
they choose and set it as their default front page. The current situation
when every theme on wordpress.org looks the same should have been resolved
a long time ago. WordPress is no longer just a blog platform and in case
if an author wants to create eCommerce theme then there is no way he can
show how it will look like to the potential user. User checks the preview
and sees a blog even though it is capable of doing much more.

If I create a theme I know what it should look like and a template would
improve the current situation but I don't like the idea of allowing
authors to choose just the template because then authors will create hard-
coded templates and the reason for that will be that the current demo
content that is provided for every single theme on wordpress.org looks
just awful and in most cases doesn't represent what it actually can do.

I vote for a customizable content + template. WordPress can do much mure
than just a blog and authors should be allowed to show that.
