Comment:

 Well John, that's not very encouraging for HTTPS users...

 This should be added at least as a option somewhere... as you mentioned,
 an opt-in.

 Basically this update could have hardly affected the  rankings of my
 website and end up with 3 variants of my every single page in Google
 Index... I'm not really a fan of a canonical link tag, this is useful but
 not to be abused of...

 As I said, at least is a single file I need to change so I will be staying
 with the canonical.php from 4.0 ... Is the first time in 2 years I have an
 issue on a update... and this is very annoying specially being on
 automatically update which I have now disabled.

 I consider that this should be address faster that 4.2, at least in 4.1
 ... specially that everybody is pushing towards forcing SSL now...
