 I never understood the .htaccess file either.

 I've had a GoDaddy Shared hosting account for over 3 years. In the
 beginning it was a Microsoft installation, then I changed to Linux, and
 recently I changed their provided Dashboard to cPanel. During that process
 a .htaccess file has appeared and disappeared several times. Currently I
 can't find it in cPanel, and GoDaddy advised me not to worry about it. I
 just uninstalled the New Nines Adaptive Images plugin (no longer available
 on WordPress.org) and was trying to delete some rewrite code from my
 .htaccess file that I had added months ago. Can't file the .htaccess file
 on GoDaddy's server to remove it. I don't know if I should worry about it
 or not.
