Comment:

 You convinced me. Your suggestion seems to be the simplest. My thoughts
 aren't really relevant to the menu structure, thus they aren't relevant to
 this ticket. I will create new tickets or write a plugin to implement the
 status inheritance and status limitation ideas.

 To implement your suggestion a patch should do the following:
 * complete the list of allowed statuses in parent selection
 * use the walker classes to exclude descendants of unpublished parent
 pages
 Time permitting, I will ask other developers for feedback and write a
 patch.

 @OSD & vinceger: that's off topic. We try to solve problems within this
 ticket. And replies like theses are counterproductive.. :P
