Good call about the other media details views gcorne, I was not aware of
those, or of the insert from URL view.

On small screens it will behave exactly the same as the sidebar on all the
other media modal views. Here's how it looks currently:

Will be something similar to that. The main image will shrink to fit in
the left column as will the caption and alt text fields

 > 1. Entering a custom Link To URL is a bit awkward in the narrow column.
That's how it already is in the insert media view. Is it awkward there
too? Maybe this is a separate issue

 > 2. The "file type" field is not very useful since the extension is also
communicated via the "file name" field that is directly above.
Agreed, I only included it because it's also there in the sidebar of the
edit media page. Also useless because this screen only comes up when
you're editing the details of an image, whereas video and audio get their
own details views. File type detail is not needed.

 > In terms of functionality, one change that I would like to make is to
make the image size reflect the selected size (e.g. thumbnail, medium,
etc..), which makes me wonder if that particular control should be more
visually connected to the preview image.
 I agree with this too.

Let me see if I can rework this.
