 What exactly is the status of this ticket?

 - Is someone from the core team supposed to review the provided patch and
 provide feedback?
 - Is the provided patch something that may be accepted or do we need to
 provide alternative solutions?
 - Is there another feature or change that is coming down the pipes that we
 are waiting on?
 - Should we focus on writing unit tests that fail when the limitations are
 reached?

 I'd be glad to work on this ticket, but don't want to do so without
 understanding where we are in the process and what work will actually get
 the ball rolling.
