 This sounds like an incomplete 4.0.1 to 4.1 upgrade. `wp_json_encode()` is
 defined in [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/4.1/src/wp-
 includes/functions.php#L2638 wp-includes/functions.php].

 The main issue here appears to be SSL redirect loop. Might be related to
 #29708.
