 Not sure if any of the following is possible, but just typing "aloud"...

 What if the $_POST was split into pieces anytime the $_POST approached the
 limit. If these ''chunks'' could be stashed (in a transient or something?)
 then when the page reloads it checks for the presence of additional
 ''chunks'' to process?

 What about preparing the ''chunks'' via ajax and then processing that when
 the form posts?

 Can unchanged items not be posted?
