 mordauk: the core problem is that this isn't my first go-round with WP
 developers and producing patches that they disagree with, even if you fix
 a problem they acknowledge and have no other fix for, is a waste of time.
 This issue was opened because I intended to write a patch to solve this
 very issue, and found that core library changes were essential. Thus,
 getting buy-in before wasting valuable hours.  As you can see, any effort
 I would have expended would have been wasted.

 JohnPBloch: possibly ;-)  I don't care enough to debate that one, although
 I see points both ways.

 I'm going to defer my complete answer to Nacin until tomorrow, allowing
 probably for more coherence and hopefully setting aside some of today's
 frustration between now and then.
