 +1 for making this the default behaviour again or at least providing a
 filter so that it can be made the default behaviour if preferred.

 I've certainly found this a performance issue on sites with large images
 and also the workflow is not intuitive on some sites that auto-create and
 display galleries based on image attached to a post.
